Reviews:

Rilo Kiley took form when L.A.-based songwriter/vocalist Jenny Lewis and songwriter/guitaristBlake Sennett started a folk duo to put their living room demos down on tape. They soon added bass and drums, put out the demos together as their first album—TakeOffs and Landings—and hit the road with a collection of rave reviewsin their back pocket.

Rilo Kiley has obviously listened to their share of Velvet Underground, JoyDivision and other indie rockers. Most tunes are marked by a soothing threeor four chord drone, a folky melody supplied by Lewis' restrained vocals, the slightly off center rhythms of drummer Jason Boesel and bassist Pierre deReederand Sennett's left field guitar antics—a crystalline flurry of notes, some crunchy power chords, a bit of fancy folk picking. But it's Lewis'unassuming sing/speak style and the urgent poetry of the lyrics that reallycaptures your attention. Like their heroes, they cast a jaundiced eye on modernlife, managing to turn the despair and alienation they see into art. "ABetter Son/Daughter" peeks into the brain of a minimum wage worker withan insane mother trying to find a reason to go on living, "The Good ThatWon't Come Out" is the portrait of a tongue-tied woman who sees herchance for romance passing her by due to her inability to speak her mind (andheart) while "Hail to the Sunlight That Surrounds You" starts outas an atypically uptempo romp before taking a subtle left turn into heartacheand misfortune.
