At last—the ideal band for thoughtful music listeners whowant another reason to look down on Good Charlotte fans for being immature. LikeJimmy Eat World, Motion City Soundtrack insists that mainstream pop-punk isn'tjust for kids, and they give maturity a bad name in the process. And like JimmyEat World, they're catchy enough to be a threat. Frontman Justin Pierre is sointense about his absolutely mundane life situations he can carry you along withhim if you're not careful. And he's so unclear about what he's saying ("They confiscatedevery accident/ And turned ourselves in on our selfish turns") that it must be,like, poetry or something.As insufferable as their meaningfully tuneful bouncecan be, Motion City Soundtrack are on to something—they nail that moment in yourearly twenties when you're so sure you've outgrown your adolescence that you takeyourself seriously to a fault. That feeling is often followed by defensive nostalgia,hence "The Future Freaks Me Out," a statement of purpose that would sound rightat home on the radio next to that stupid Ataris hit about listening to ‘80s songs.If only MCS had the insight or humor to make any sense of those feelings, insteadof enshrining them as timeless wisdom. And judging by the cultural artifacts thatfreak Pierre out ("What's up with Will & Grace/ I don't get drum and bass"), thekid's in for a rough stretch of years ahead.
