Concord

On Natural Disaster, the debut solo album from Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino, the Los-Angeles based singer/songwriter takes close account of the endless catastrophes and upheavals of modern life, offering a high-minded and open-hearted response that makes room for compassion, imagination, and a radical sense of possibility.

Napalm Records

Atlanta quintet Sevendust may be one of the most reliable bands in heavy music, putting out a dependable brand of riff-heavy rock album after album and tour after tour. Yet Truth Killer hits different. The band’s first album on Napalm Records captures the aggression for which it’s known while also infusing melodic risk-taking that elevates the sound.

Century Media

While packing classic deathcore elements, it’s obvious the band are pushing their sound into the future. The industrial, more experimental elements may put off more ‘meat and potatoes’ deathcore fans, but it’s impressive to see Signs of the Swarm branch out into a somewhat under-mixed genre. Certainly, their most gripping and impressive work to date.

New West

Susto chronicle seasons of transformation within their distinct, diverse, and dynamic breed of rock ‘n’ roll enlivened in broad strokes of classic songwriting, storytelling and dalliances of sonic unpredictability. The band—led by frontman and songwriter Justin Osborne—explore change physically, emotionally, and spiritually on their fifth full–length.

Love’s Holiday sits proudly in Oxbow’s 35–year–old musical arsenal. It is deeply personal yet thoroughly accessible and relatable, all wrapped in the energy, hostility and vivacity that the band have always had. It’s a record that is packed full of simply brilliant songs that will undoubtedly become favorite Oxbow tracks both onstage and on record for the rest of time.

With such an infectious energy it’s clear the brothers have poured their heart and soul into The Winding Way, managing to synthesize all that works about the group in a loving melting pot of blues, soul and rock. Even if it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, when all involved are having such a blast, it’s hard not to have a smile on your face with musicianship of this quality.

Evil Teen Recordings

And I For You’s 11 tracks, born out of the pandemic, thematically tackle adversity, longing, family, home, love, and an unwavering hope throughout life’s storms. Blending their signature mix of reggae, rock, funk and soul Pressing Strings showcases tremendous creative growth, maturity, and resilience backed by what will prove to be timeless lyrical messages.

High Pulp - Days In The Desert

High Pulp - Days In The Desert - ANTI
Los Angeles-based experimental jazz collective High Pulp release their new album Days In The Desert in peak sweltering summer heat. The titular desert is both literal and metaphorical: it's the Mojave Desert that the band powers through on their many DIY tours around the country, and the band's founder / drummer Bobby Granfelt perceives the desert as "a spiritual quest" as well. Amid the trials of our present moment, you must look within, relying solely on your own instincts to keep moving forward. "You're in the desert and it's a long, lonesome process and a lot of times you have to check yourself to ask 'Is this right? Is this good? Is it too out?'" he says.High Pulp's Days in the Desert makes this vision come true, finding the West Coast band fully emerging into their own sound. Rooted in the jazz tradition while also smitten by indie-rock and electronic music, High Pulp was willing to grab from all these sounds at once to pursue something truly their own. Their third full-length album (following 2022's promising Anti- debut Pursuit of Ends), Days in the Desert reveals the band realizing their strengths, deepening their own bonds, and pushing all these skills into a thrilling new sonic vista all but unimaginable just a few years before.

Miya Folick - Roach

Miya Folick - Roach - Nettwerk Records
Roach is Miya Folick's clearest and most direct work yet, eschewing some of the lyrical and musical obfuscations she layered onto her 2018 debut album, Premonitions. With ear-worm melodies, heart-wrenching poetry, eclectic production and anchored by Folick's once-in-a-lifetime voice, Roach straddles a line between pop and something more experimental. She enlisted a team of collaborators who she trusted to bring out the grittier side of her artistry, including Gabe Wax (War on Drugs, Fleet Foxes), Mike Malchicoff (King Princess, Bo Burnham), Max Hershenow (MS MR) and a team of some of LA's best players. The result is an album that sounds as honest and intimate as the subject matter at hand, a candid snapshot of where she is now and what it took to get there.

What's New 7-21-23

Republic

Starcatcher is full of delightful contrasts, none of them jarring. The music remains emotive and mountainous in scale, but there's no fat here, no pomp-filled production. It’s the work of a band not fazed by success, but continuing to develop its art. With a nod to the classic rock that inspired them, Greta Van Fleet continue to contort those great influences in challenging and evocative new directions.

ABKCO

The first official Rolling Stones rarities collection was originally released in June 1975. Combines legendary outtakes, rarities, and a wealth of demos that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards composed for other artists, which were subsequently re-recorded by the Stones themselves. The collection includes an orchestrated version of "Out Of Time," featured in Quentin Tarantino's film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Little Songs is an upbeat, sometimes somber glimpse into the work and social life of the Canadian West, opening emotional turns as mature and heartening as the resonant baritone voice writing and singing them. Fans of Wall’s will find the same hardscrabble voice they’ve loved over the years connecting the contemporary world to the values, hardships, and celebrations of rural life.

Produced with previous collaborators Jeff Hazin and Ralph Castelli, alt-pop prodigy glaive's debut album finds him turning inward, reflecting with blunt honesty about growing up and outgrowing his North Carolina hometown. Glaive recorded the 13-track collection in a windowless garage in L.A. with a dog and no air conditioning. Featuring the singles "as if" and "i'm nothing that's all i am."

Verve

Ninety minutes of never-before-heard music from the John Coltrane Quintet were recently discovered at the New York Public Library. In addition to some well-known Coltrane material ("Impressions"), there is a breathtaking feature for Dolphy's bass clarinet on "When Lights Are Low" and the only known non-studio recording of Coltrane's composition "Africa", from the Africa/Brass album.

Third Man

Snõõper are an adrenalized mix of mutant punk and garage rock, with a little twee and art rock in there as well, all thrown in a blender and set to puree. Given the brief glimpses into their music and thrilling live performances, one might wonder if the group could hold the line for a full album. The answer is an enthusiastic yes. In the words of Henry Rollins, “Speaking selfishly, I want Snõõper to hurry up and make another album.”

Thirty Tigers

This self-produced, honest and emotional new album highlights Nelson's strength as a songwriter and the band's uncompromising commitment to clarity, compassionate tones, and exceptional melodic moments. Lyrically, Sticks and Stones spans the themes of Drinking, Heartbreak, Love, Lying, Hope, Nature, Self-Reflection, Work-Life Balance, Settling Down, Home, Time, Longing and more.
