What's New 3-4-22
Carter Family meets Addams Family. Rich with quality finger picking and replete with harmonies, Easy Listening for Jerks offers many new moods of songs we think we know so well. Under a title that recalls the songwriting humour of Roger Miller and Steve Martin’s comedy stylings alike, the EPs offer a surprising and compelling mix of gravity and levity. Foggy Mountain Boys, but make it Beetlejuice.
On their Dualtone debut Sticking With It, Seattle-based seven-piece The Dip deliver the kind of unbridled soul/R&B that hits on every emotional level, inciting everything from raw catharsis to heavy-hearted reckoning to wildly exuberant joy. The resulting body of work captures the mood of the current moment while offering immediate escape into a more elevated state of mind.
Written alongside Ignorance, How Is It… a piece of reflection and quiet, meant to hold stillness in the aftermath. Recorded live, as a performance; an improvisation, with a group of Toronto jazz musicians, it was imagined as a record of ballads; simple, pure, almost naive, but speaking to many of the same realities as Ignorance does. Two albums as two halves of the same coin; the moon and sun, a photograph and a photonegative.
The jazztronica duo’ full-length debut Motherland Journey is an album years in the making, celebrating pushing boundaries, taking risks, and overcoming adversity. Following their 2021 EP, We Will Rise, this new album is a star-studded affair featuring the duo (producer NK-OK and multi-instrumentalist Mr DM) joined by collaborators including Ghetto Boy, Tiana Major9, KillBeatz and more.
Sonically, the album is a return to their earlier work and the kind of raw ethos that lies at the heart of Band of Horses. Emotionally intense, both on a personal and elemental level, we find band founder Ben Bridwell more autobiographical than he’s ever been on record detailing the nebulous frustrations and quiet indignities of relationship changes and what a person will do to make things right.
The sole, full length album from Loney Hutchins's most productive era in the 197’s. In '79 the country rock album was too folksy for LA and too electric for Nashville. Featuring a rhythm section from Dolly Parton's live band during her 'Jolene' period, and searing hot country licks, this reissue is restored from the original 2" multitrack tapes, including two never before heard tracks.
Legendary guitar player Mike Campbell, while seemingly inseparable from Tom Petty for over four decades, has always shown independence and musical curiosity which has resulted in some remarkable projects. External Combustion assures us that the Dirty Knobs are not side-band lark but, as tragic circumstances dictate, a worthy full-time concern for Campbell and his talents.
Harder, faster, shorter and louder than any other Porches record, it’s direct and pointed, charged up and chaotic, and as described by creator Aaron Maine, “the most energetic, off-the-cuff moments, collaged together into the most captivating songs I could make.” It’s a dreamy, primal journey of coping with an incomprehensible time, reveling in the joy and confusion of living through it all.
This is the most unforgivably doomy Crowbar record since their landmark 1998 effort, Odd Fellows Rest. It’s reverently old-school, counterbalanced by a resonant melodicism that’s stunningly mature. Songs like “Chemical Gods,” “Bleeding from Every Hole,” and “It’s Always Worth the Gain” demonstrate what Crowbar does better than any other band: powerful, evocative, and crushingly heavy music.
Filthy, belligerent and obnoxious, Midnight make music to start fights to. Since 2003, one-man-band Athenar has been churning out an ungodly racket, dropping countless demos, splits and EPs - and in 2022 he returns, delivering a catchy mixture of black metal, speed metal, and dirty punk rock. "I always want it to be loud and nasty," he asserts. "That kinda thing never gets old with me.”
Sabaton’s tenth full-length was crafted as a concept album that dives deep into previously unexplored atrocities, miracles and events tied to the early 20th century's World War I. The stories and history told here are not only engaging, and well-told musically and vocally, but are important to remember. A worthwhile addition to any metal (or history) fan's library.
"You're born into the world as a blank canvas. As you meet people and experience things, you're getting stained and torn up. " That's the concept here. Featuring guest appearances from Geoff Rickly, Jeff Smith and Bones, This World Is Going To Ruin You is a fully realized version of Vein.FM’s darker and more disgusting inception of metallic hardcore.

What's New 2-25-22
Some forty years into one of music’s most impactful partnerships, Tears For Fears have arrived together at The Tipping Point – the group’s ambitious, accomplished and surprising first new studio album in nearly two decades. An inspired song cycle that vividly recalls the depth and emotional force of the group’s earliest triumphs, The Tipping Point is the bold, beautiful and powerful sound of Tears For Fears finding themselves together all over again
Over the past fifteen years, Colorado's Allegaeon have built themselves a unique place in the musical landscape, forcing both technicality and melody to the forefront as they create tumultuous and riveting death metal. With Damnum, their sixth full-length, they push everything further into the extreme, and in the process deliver the definitive Allegaeon record, which while forging into new territory, takes everything compelling about the band and enhances it.
A few years ago, there were whispers about a glorious album of Led Zeppelin covers, meticulously put together by superstar producer Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance). The only thing missing was vocals. Beth's dynamically expressive singing, which spans honeyed delicate tones, sandpaper gritty soulfulness, and rattle-the-rafters high notes, would be the perfect fit and the result is an artistic feat – a viscerally rocking album that is both faithful and personal.
The songs of Still Life were written in quiet moments between tours and recorded away from Texas in Ontario with musician and producer Daniel Romano. The phrasing and tones recall John Cale, The Kinks, Richard and Linda Thompson-like-minded artists of the late '60s and early '70s, another era of transition and innovation. It’s an offering of deliberation, a confirmation that creation is an act of hope.
Robert Glasper’s (who the New York Times proclaims is “probably the most prominent jazz musician of his generation”) highly anticipated third installment to the Black Radio album series is a cultural moment that celebrates black love and resilience, features an eclectic group of talented collaborators. An essential addition to Glasper’s seminal series. *Available on Limited Edition Indie Exclusive Chartreuse 2 LP*
Like every record Superchunk has made over the last thirty-some years, Wild Loneliness is unskippably excellent and infectious. It’s a blend of stripped-down and lush, electric and acoustic, highs and lows. After the (ahem, completely justifiable) anger of What a Time to Be Alive, this new record is less about what we’ve lost in these harrowing times and more about what we have to be thankful for.
Caroline’s debut often cascades with force like an avalanche, squalling and rumbling on the edge of all-out collapse. At other points they slip back into impossibly fragile moments of quiet – a simple bassline or a rattle of snare the only sound amid a dark sea of silence. These songs are expansive and emotive pieces, their rich palette drawing on a mixture of choral singing, Midwestern emo and their roots in Appalachian folk.
Each track is a lyrical short story, minimal poem in prose, presented in a lavish sonic guise, featuring Scorpions trademarks from the early 1980s. The wealth of inspiration from the band’s longstanding career is an overflowing treasure chest that forges an arc between yesterday and tomorrow. Rock Believer is perhaps the group’s most characteristic album to date – a recording by a band at the pinnacle of their musical art.
The Grammy-winning singer/songwriter's third album in twelve months is his most ambitious project to date. Written and recorded in less than a week, the record tells a classic American story of a Civil War-era couple torn apart by violence and reunited by love—what Simpson calls "a simple tale of either redemption or revenge. I just wanted to write a story—not a collection of songs that tell a story, but an actual story, front to back.”
In the wake of his time leading The Healers, Marr’s solo career has given rise to three UK Top Ten albums. He now returns with his most expansive work to date, Fever Dreams Pts 1-4. It was created during the long, uncertain period that followed the arrival of the UK’s first lockdown, when his focus was pushed into both his interior life, and evoking the emotional states of others. “It’s an inspired record, and I couldn’t wait to get in and record every day,” he says. “But I had to go inwards.”
Like pausing a VHS tape, music freezes the frenetic motion of daily existence. Even if just for an instant, it calms the feedback loop of routine, engages respite, and provides perspective. Siphoning guitar transmissions and a dynamic vocal push-and-pull through a lens of cinematic production, Lo Moon deftly balance expansive soundscapes and eloquent songcraft, multimately use music to make sense of each day on their sophomore offering, A Modern Life.
Sisters Eleanor and Bonnie, two of roots music's most accomplished songwriter/instrumentalist/ vocalists, are releasing their first album together as The Whitmore Sisters. Ghost Stories is inspired by the loss of family, friends, ex-boyfriends and - on the title track - people who died by police violence. These "ghosts" chose to appear right as Covid became entrenched - when live music evaporated and people were isolated from each other.
Finnish figureheads Amorphis take us on an epic journey through the lands of the north, their rich cultural and historical heritage and musical traditions. This is not only an album for fans or metal connoisseurs. It’s a must for every imaginative mind out there with a soft spot for cinematic soundscapes, triumphant melodies and breathtaking dynamics measuring the borderlands of light and dark.
Continuing the fearless exploration of their legendary sound's outer limits, UK's Grindcore pioneers Napalm Death return with Resentment is Always Seismic: A Final Throw of Throes, a partner recording to their much acclaimed Throes Of Joy In The Jaws Of Defeatism album from 2020. Concluding matters through vital, tumultuous Grindcore and shockwave ambience, this 8-track mini-album with all previously unreleased material - including Bad Brains and Slab!
True to the band’s expanding legacy, 4 has everything you’ve come to expect from the mega group, but also unlike anything you’ve heard from them yet. This time out, they captured a certain magic – the sound of five band mates listening to and playing off one another in the spirit of live, in-the-moment collaboration. “It has a very spontaneous, fun kind of thing to it, and I love that,” Slash says. “It’s the sound of the five of us just jamming together in one room.
Closing in on 40 eventful years of existence, Canada's progressive sci-fi metal innovators Voivod introduce their 15th studio album Synchro Anarchy. Following 2018's Juno Award winning album, The Wake, and 2020's stellar Lost Machine - Live, these nine tracks reaffirm Voivod as one of the most fervently creative bands on the planet.
The Dream is an album of intrigue, beauty and humanity - a coalescence of everything that has made alt-J a global band with real staying power. True-crime inspired stories and tales of Hollywood and the Chateau Marmont rub shoulders with some of the band’s most personal moments to-date. It’s the sound of a band growing as songwriters and storytellers.
"I made a psychedelic rock record that Sleep and High on Fire fans would like," Matt Pike says when asked for a Cliffs Notes description of the album. And maybe if you're not a Sleep or High on Fire fan, you might like it too. I definitely think it's interesting; it has D-Beat punk, two-step. It's got everything and it still works together, it doesn't sound odd. It's just an off-the-wall psychedelic rock record."
Across 18 songs presented in 4 chapters, many types of style and song structures can be heard. Songs without drums, songs centered around acoustic guitar, mostly electronic songs with no guitar, wandering and repetitive melodies, songs built around the string sections. Don’t you worry though, many of the drum machines, organs, keyboards and tones that listeners associate with Beach House remain.

Tears For Fears - The Tipping Point - Concord Records
Some forty years into one of music’s most impactful partnerships, Tears For Fears have arrived together at The Tipping Point – the group’s ambitious, accomplished and surprising first new studio album in nearly two decades. An inspired song cycle that vividly recalls the depth and emotional force of the group’s earliest triumphs, The Tipping Point is the bold, beautiful and powerful sound of Tears For Fears finding themselves together all over again.
Dashboard Confessional - All The Truth That I Can Tell - Hidden Note Records
Dashboard Confessional’s ninth studio album, All The Truth That I Can Tell, is both a remarkable renewal and fortunate step forward for the band’s songwriter, front man, and founder, Chris Carrabba. All The Truth That I Can Tell stands among Carrabba’s finest – a strikingly potent musical look at himself through a rediscovered keyhole, both an achievement of vision and a vital burst of artistic clarity; less like reading someone’s diary and more like reading their eyes. All The Truth That I Can Tell is available exclusively on “Cold Night” transparent dark blue/green vinyl.
Lo Moon - A Modern Life - Strngr Recordings
Like pausing a VHS tape, music freezes the frenetic motion of daily existence. Even if just for an instant, it calms the feedback loop of routine, engages respite, and provides perspective. Siphoning guitar transmissions and a dynamic vocal push-and-pull through a lens of cinematic production, Lo Moon deftly balance expansive soundscapes and eloquent songcraft. The Los Angeles based quartet—Matt Lowell, Crisanta Baker, Sam Stewart and Sterling Laws - ultimately use music to make sense of each day on their sophomore offering, A Modern Life [Strngr Recordings/Thirty Tigers].
Scorpions - Rock Believer - Spinefarm
Legendary rockers Scorpions return with their new album, Rock Believer, which was created in the studio during the lockdown in their home base Hannover. “The album was written and recorded in the style of the classic Scorpions DNA with core Schenker/Meine compositions. We really went back to the essence of what defined us in the first place,” says front-man Klaus Meine. He goes on to explain how the new songs came to have such incredible, fresh energy and fervor: “We recorded the album as a band, live, in one room, like we did back in the Eighties. We can’t wait to get started and finally play for our fans again.” The sound of the new album has massive energy, delivers a real adrenaline rush and shows uncompromising quality.
